as posted by the channelA Mother’s Fierce Love for Holiness
In a world that often minimizes the gravity of sin, the words of St. Louis IX’s mother strike us with both shock and clarity: “I’d rather see you dead than commit a mortal sin.” To modern ears, this may sound extreme, even harsh. Yet behind those words lies the profound truth of the Catholic faith: eternal separation from God through mortal sin is infinitely worse than physical death.
Fr. Chris Alar reminds us that this saintly mother was not motivated by cruelty, but by love — a love that sought her son’s eternal salvation above all else. Her words call us to reflect on our own priorities. Do we fear offending God more than we fear discomfort, rejection, or loss in this life? Do we truly see sin for what it is: a rupture in our relationship with God, our source of life and happiness?
This is the heart of Catholic teaching — that the sacraments, especially Confession and the Eucharist, are given to us as lifelines of grace to restore and strengthen us against the snares of sin. If St. Louis IX’s mother spoke with such passion about her son’s soul, how much more should we examine our own hearts and return again and again to the fountain of mercy Christ offers His Church.
