Some of the Goods God Brought Out of the Evils of 9/11

Fr. Chris Alar reflected on how God can bring good even out of great evil, pointing to the tragic events of 9/11. While the wounds of that day remain heavy on our hearts, the Lord, in His providence, drew forth graces amidst the devastation. Fr. Chris shared moving examples: a firefighter, shaken by what he experienced, later answered the call to become a priest; countless people who had drifted from faith returned to the Church; and many who went back continued in their conversion, deepening their walk with Christ.

The Catechism reminds us that God never wills evil but, in His wisdom and love, permits it so that He might draw forth a greater good (CCC 311–314). The mystery of the Cross teaches us this truth—Christ Himself endured the worst of human cruelty, and from that came the redemption of the world. In the same way, our national tragedy on September 11, 2001, while leaving a scar, also became an instrument by which God stirred hearts to faith, courage, and sacrificial love.

These stories remind us that our hope must never be extinguished, even when the world seems darkest. God does not abandon His people; He brings light out of the shadows, resurrection out of the tomb. As we remember those who died and those who continue to carry the pain of loss, let us also remember the graces that flowed, and still flow, from those days. In faith, we trust that God always works all things together for good for those who love Him (Rom 8:28).
