Today the Church honors St. Vincent de Paul (1581–1660), one of the greatest witnesses of Christian charity. Born into poverty in France, he was ordained a priest at just 19 years old. At first, he pursued comfort and status, but an encounter with the poor and a deep conversion of heart led him to dedicate his life to serving Christ in the needy.
St. Vincent founded the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentians) and, with the help of St. Louise de Marillac, the Daughters of Charity. Together they transformed Catholic charity by organizing hospitals, orphanages, homes for the elderly, and missions for the rural poor. His vision of practical, organized love of neighbor gave birth to what we know today as the Vincentian Family, still serving Christ worldwide.
The Catechism reminds us that “The works of mercy are charitable actions by which we come to the aid of our neighbor” (CCC 2447). St. Vincent lived this truth radically, seeing Christ in every poor person he encountered. He once said: “You will find out that Charity is a heavy burden to carry, heavier than the bowl of soup and the basket of bread. But you must keep your gentleness and your smile. It is not enough to give soup and bread. This the rich can do. You are the servant of the poor.”
May St. Vincent de Paul teach us that holiness is not found in comfort but in giving of ourselves — in charity, mercy, and love. St. Vincent de Paul, pray for us!
