Christ Is the New Temple: Where God Dwells Today

Christ is the new temple, and as members of His body, we are also temples of God. This profound truth marks a radical shift in salvation history. God no longer dwells in a temple in Jerusalem, which was the whole point of one of the main revelations in the Book of Revelation to the Israelites who had converted to Christianity. Saint John is pointing out that this unveiling shows us that we are in a new age.

This new age does not rely on a geographical location or a material temple. Christ is the new temple. We are members of that temple. We are temples themselves, and that is why God dwells always where the Church is. The physical temple in Jerusalem, with its holy of holies and sacrificial system, was a shadow of the reality that would come in Christ. When Jesus died on the cross, the veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom, signifying that the way to God was now open to all through His sacrifice.

The early Christians understood this transformation deeply. They knew that the temple was no longer a building but a people. The Church, the Body of Christ, became the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. This is why the Apostle Paul could write to the Corinthians that they were the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwelt within them. Each baptized Christian carries the presence of God within their soul, making every believer a living tabernacle.

This truth has profound implications for how we live our faith. If we are temples of God, then our bodies must be treated with reverence and respect. We cannot defile what God has made holy. Our thoughts, words, and actions should reflect the dignity of being God's dwelling place. This is especially important in a world that often treats the human body as mere matter, something to be used and discarded.

Let us never forget that Christ is the new temple. Let us live as temples of God, holy and set apart for His glory. Let us protect the unity of the Church, for in our division, we obscure the presence of God in the world. May we always remember that God dwells with us, not in stone and mortar, but in the hearts of His people.
