16:13Now PlayingIn today’s homily, Fr. Chris Alar explains the powerful meaning behind Jesus and the fig tree. Though it was not the season for figs, the tree becomes a biblical sign of Israel — a people planted by God to bear fruit: faith, repentance, justice, mercy, holiness, and true worship.
The fig tree had leaves but no fruit. In the same way, Israel had the Temple, sacrifices, religious leaders, and outward signs of religion, but many hearts were far from God. Jesus was looking for the fruit of piety and true conversion, but instead He found empty appearances and commerce taking place in the Temple.
This Gospel is not only a warning for Israel, but for all of us. Jesus wants both leaves and fruit outward worship joined to a converted heart. He calls us to move beyond appearances and bear real spiritual fruit through faith, prayer, mercy, repentance, and holiness.
