Ced Gee on Seeing the Birth of Hip Hop in the Bronx, Forming Ultramagnetic MC's (Part 1)

MC Ced Gee from the Ultramagnetic MCs described his upbringing in the West Bronx. Ced Gee said the environment was family-oriented and comprised of Blacks on one side and Italians on the other side. Over time, the Italian population dwindled and Ced Gee moved to the Claremont Projects by the eighth grade.

The Ultramagnetic MCs members also talked about living through the numerous fires that plagued the Bronx during the 1970s, highlighting that even his building burned down. He described witnessing the birth of Hip Hop and sneaking with his brothers to watch DJ Kool Herc play.

In this clip, Ced-Gee speaking about watching the beginnings of hip-hop forming while he was growing up in NYC, and he admits that he never would've thought that it would go global at the time. Ced-Gee went on to explain how hip-hop was not accepted until it started becoming more popular and cassettes were being sold outside of the city. He also spoke about forming the Ultramagnetic MCs with Kool Keith, who Ced-Gee attributes with coming up with the name and concept of the group.
