John "Boxer" Mendoza explained how he frequently ended up in prison due to an addiction to robberies. Eventually, this resulted in an extended prison sentence during which he was involved in a group assault and subsequently placed in a prison inside a prison (the SHU program); this program locked identified threats within the institution in a cell for 23 hours a day.
