Comedian Aries Spears and DJ Vlad recently engaged in a spirited debate over the most soulful White male singers. Vlad started with his top three picks: Elton John, Daryl Hall of Hall & Oates, and George Michael. Spears immediately disagreed, claiming there's "nothing soulful" about Elton John, who he believes is purely pop. He did, however, agree with Vlad on George Michael, acknowledging his talent and collaborations with iconic Black artists. Daryl Hall received high praise from Spears, who humorously noted that Hall & Oates would be welcome at a cookout. Spears also mentioned Michael McDonald and his soulful duet with Patti LaBelle as an oversight in Vlad’s list. The conversation shifted to soulful White female artists, where Spears critiqued Teena Marie and excluded Adele, suggesting her talent doesn’t equate to universal acceptance in the Black community.
