Boxing legend Michael Spinks recently sat down with VladTV to discuss his path to becoming an Olympic gold medalist as part of the 1976 U.S. Olympic boxing team. Growing up in a tough environment in St. Louis, he initially showed little interest in boxing—his brother Leon was the torchbearer. However, inspired by Leon, Michael decided to try his hand in the ring, eventually winning the 1974 Golden Gloves light middleweight championship. Despite his growing success, Spinks never imagined boxing would become a career.

When the 1976 Olympic tryouts approached, Spinks joined with determination alongside a star-studded team featuring boxing icons like Sugar Ray Leonard. Winning the gold medal in Montreal was especially satisfying for Spinks, having won against a Russian opponent who had previously beaten him, symbolizing a personal and national victory during the tense Cold War era. Spinks described their team, boasting multiple gold medals, as possibly the best Olympic boxing team ever.
