Michael Spinks recalled his brother Leon Spinks' historic fight against Muhammad Ali in 1978. While reminiscing about their journey from humble beginnings to the pinnacle of boxing, Michael detailed how winning an Olympic gold medal did not immediately change his life. Returning to the United States, Michael found himself working at a chemical plant and washing dishes at the Holiday Inn, a humbling experience despite his Olympic success.
Leon, after a stint in the Marines, turned professional earlier and soon found himself on a fast track to the heavyweight championship. With only eight fights under his belt, Leon faced Muhammad Ali. It was a monumental bout—15 rounds that ended with Leon defeating Ali by split decision. Leon's victory marked the first time anyone had taken Ali's heavyweight title in the ring, an unprecedented and unforgettable achievement.
Michael, who won his own fight on the undercard that night, vividly recounted the electric atmosphere and their shared triumph. Both brothers emerged victorious, yet Michael noted that Leon's success led to challenges, as people sought to influence him. Ultimately, a rematch saw Ali reclaim his title.
