John "Red" Shea, former associate of infamous mob boss Whitey Bulger, shared his thoughts on Bulger's arrest in 2011, after 16 years on the run. Shea was unaware of Bulger's whereabouts all these years, having last heard of him being in Chicago. The mobster was eventually found in Santa Monica, California, living quietly under the radar with $800,000 in cash stashed within his apartment walls. A far cry from his notorious past, Bulger was staying low profile alongside his girlfriend.
Shea recounted expressing disbelief upon receiving news of Bulger's arrest, having walked by Bulger's Santa Monica abode multiple times unknowingly. Bulger was second only to Osama bin Laden on the FBI's Most Wanted list and faced numerous charges, including 19 murders. Despite the possibility of testifying against Bulger, Shea refused, aligning with his staunchness against betrayal even towards a former ally labeled a "rat."
