Mike Moy made history in 2003 by becoming the first-ever Chinese detective in his precinct. Originally relishing the freedom of a beat cop, Moy candidly admits he was hesitant to embrace the role of detective due to the demanding and irregular hours. His language skills and cultural insight, however, made him an essential asset during a surge in Chinatown's Asian-on-Asian crime, prompting recommendations for his promotion.
In one of his most striking cases, Moy's integrity was tested as he successfully navigated an attempted bribe from a local prostitution and gambling ring owner. This pivotal moment not only reinforced his dedication to the force but also allowed him to choose a desired position within the department as a reward for his integrity. Despite the pressures of his detective duties, Moy preferred the anonymity and community-focused work he initially enjoyed as a cop, highlighting his dedication to serving the public while balancing personal privacy.
