Actor Clifton Powell shares the story behind landing his memorable role as Chauncey, the infamous snitch, in the Hughes brothers’ iconic 1993 film *Menace II Society*. Originally, Tupac Shakur was set to play Chauncey but dropped out amid creative disagreements over his character’s backstory. Powell, invited unexpectedly to a Wesley Snipes party, was encouraged by a fellow actor to audition—securing the part shortly after. He recalls filming intense scenes in South Central LA, including a moment where his character disrespects a white car thief, adding improvised touches to capture the raw neighborhood vibe.
Though playing a "snitch" led to occasional off-screen reactions, Powell embraces the role as a career milestone in a film he calls “raw” and “transcendent.” Reflecting on the experience, he credits preparation and adaptability for his success and praises the Hughes brothers for their powerful vision that turned *Menace II Society* into a cult classic.
