Hunter Biden admitted in an interview that joining the board of Burisma Holdings, a major Ukrainian natural gas company, was a mistake. He accepted the role in 2014 while his father, then-Vice President Joe Biden, was involved in U.S. policy toward Ukraine, prompting years of controversy. Hunter said the job paid about $50,000 a month, calling the money “life changing.”

Biden argued he was qualified, citing corporate governance work, board experience with Amtrak and the U.S. arm of the UN World Food Program, and legal advisory roles. Still, he said he was “incredibly naive” about Ukraine’s “political viper’s nest” and believed his father would soon leave politics.

He said Joe Biden learned of the Burisma role from a press release and told him, “I hope you know what you’re doing.” Hunter denied any improper help from his father but said, in retrospect, he “should not have taken that job.”
