In a new interview, Hunter Biden discussed the 2018 handgun purchase that led to his federal conviction while he was struggling with addiction. Biden said the gun was kept in a lockbox inside his Ford F-150, which was parked at his sister-in-law’s house. He said she found the firearm while checking on him, threw it in a grocery-store trash can out of concern, and later called police after he told her the gun had to be recovered. Authorities eventually traced the gun to a man who collected cans from the trash.

Asked why he bought the gun, Biden described the purchase as impulsive, saying he walked into a Delaware gun shop while waiting for his phone to be repaired. He argued the federal law barring drug users from owning guns is vague and rarely charged as a standalone offense. Biden also claimed prosecutors used his own memoir about addiction as evidence against him.
