1:32Now PlayingThe average person's net year-to-year happiness declines from their early 20s into their early 50s.
That might sound alarming until you understand what happiness is made of.
Happiness has three macronutrients: enjoyment, satisfaction, and meaning.
As you move through adulthood, enjoyment often becomes harder to come by. That's the nature of taking on careers, raising children, caring for loved ones, and carrying greater responsibility. But that doesn't mean you're becoming less happy. It means you're trading one macronutrient for another.
Enjoyment is a short-term happiness play. Meaning is a long-term happiness play. The very things that make life less enjoyable today are often the things that fill your life with meaning. You're making happiness investments that may not feel rewarding in the moment, but over time, they begin to pay off.
