Twenty years ago, Tom Cruise was widely mocked for criticizing psychiatry and psychiatric medications. At the time, doctors, the media, and professional institutions insisted he was wrong.
In this video, I review his claims from the perspective of a board-certified psychiatrist, using what we now know from modern research.
We revisit ideas that were widely promoted in the early 2000s, including the belief that depression and ADHD were caused by chemical imbalances in the brain and that medications corrected those imbalances. I explain why those explanations were never proven, how they became mainstream anyway, and what large studies and recent reviews have since shown.
We also examine antidepressants, ADHD medications like Ritalin and Adderall, their short-term effects, long-term risks, and why many benefits wear off over time. I break down the evidence behind behavioral therapy, diet, exercise, and other non-drug approaches that consistently outperform medication alone in children.
This is not an anti-medicine video. Medications can have a role in severe cases. But parents and patients deserve the full story, not marketing slogans.
As uncomfortable as it is to admit, Tom Cruise was right about far more than most people realize.
If you or someone you love is taking psychiatric medication, this conversation matters.
