In this video, I offer an alternative explanation for Kanye West’s recent behavior that goes beyond the common narrative of a single car accident in 2002.
Kanye recently published an apology in Wall Street Journal, stating that a crash 25 years ago fractured his jaw and injured his right frontal lobe, an injury he says was only diagnosed in 2023 and later used to explain a Bipolar Type 1 diagnosis. But when you look closely at the timeline, that explanation doesn’t fully add up.
For more than a decade after the accident, Kanye was highly functional, creative, and extraordinarily productive. The manic-type behaviors that the public now associates with him didn’t really appear until around 2016, and the bipolar diagnosis itself didn’t come until 2018. That long gap raises an important question: what changed?
I walk through evidence suggesting that repeated, drug-induced brain injuries may better explain the progression we’re seeing. Kanye has openly referenced heavy marijuana use throughout his career, and after canceling the Life of Pablo tour, his insurer reportedly claimed he “smoked too much weed” to fulfill his commitments. Today’s cannabis is dramatically more potent than it was in the past, and we are now seeing an epidemic of cannabis-induced mania and psychosis. Research shows that when someone develops psychosis from cannabis, nearly half go on to receive a diagnosis of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, with conversion rates higher than almost any other drug class.
I also discuss what appears to be an accelerated decline beginning around 2023, likely driven by reported nitrous oxide use. Nitrous oxide is profoundly neurotoxic, inactivates vitamin B12, and can cause irreversible damage by disrupting the brain’s ability to properly myelinate neurons.
In the end, this isn’t about blaming one single cause. The most plausible explanation is a combination of factors: an early brain injury, years of exposure to high-potency cannabis, and more recent nitrous oxide abuse. The hopeful part is that recovery is still possible. Kanye himself writes that he is “finding my new baseline and new center through an effective regimen of medication, therapy, exercise, and clean living,” which is exactly how I would approach treating a drug-induced brain injury presenting with manic symptoms.
My goal here isn’t to diagnose from afar, but to help people better understand how substances can injure the brain over time and why these conversations matter far beyond any one celebrity.
