Drop Site spoke with Dr. Mimi Syed, a U.S.-based physician who has volunteered twice in Gaza, about what medical workers describe as the complete collapse of diagnostic capacity under Israel’s siege.
Doctors warn they are now “working blind.” At Al-Shifa Hospital, Israeli attacks destroyed X-ray and imaging units, leaving physicians unable to diagnose pneumonia, heart failure, internal bleeding, or fractures. Gaza’s Health Ministry says 90% of blood testing and transfusion supplies are depleted, 75% of core lab materials are unavailable, and critical tests for cancer, kidney, and endocrine patients have been suspended.
Separately, medical relief groups warn some 350,000 chronically ill patients face life-threatening risk as hospitals operate with extreme shortages of medicines and diagnostic tools.
