2:46Now Playing"There's a very special place for Cuba in the Latin American imaginary."
Drop Site's José Luis Granados Ceja reports on the escalating threat of a U.S. invasion of Cuba, and argues that an invasion — or a decapitation operation like what was carried out in Venezuela — would not play out the same way in Cuba. Both the Cuban people and the broader Latin American region, he says, would respond.
This week, Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared that a diplomatic solution with Cuba is "not high" in likelihood and claimed that the country was "one of the leading sponsors of terrorism in the entire region." He also oversaw the indictment of 94-year-old former president Raúl Castro on murder charges. Cuba's Foreign Minister called the comments "lies" and accused the U.S. of trying to "instigate a military aggression."
Meanwhile, U.S. sanctions have pushed Cuba to the brink. Protests have flared as frustration with the collapsing economy mounts. The electrical grid has nearly collapsed, surgeries for more than 100,000 patients — including 12,000 children — have been postponed, and a recent study found the country's infant mortality rate has nearly tripled since 2018.
Drop Site recently published a report on the looming U.S. threat of invasion, and how the Trump administration tried to push boxes of Starlinks onto Cuba as part of its $100 million humanitarian aid offer.
