2:34Now PlayingThe people of Pakistan-administered Kashmir have been protesting in the streets of Rawalakot for more than eight weeks, demanding electoral reforms — met with gunfire, arrests, a communications shutdown, and a city-wide siege cutting off access to food and medicine. More than 85 civilians have been shot, among them a PhD scholar, a night guard at a local school, the father of a serving Air Force squadron leader, and a shopkeeper returning home with groceries for his family.
While journalists in Pakistan have struggled to access the region, Drop Site’s Areeba Fatima spoke with Sardar Umar Nazir, a leader of the Joint Awami Action Committee, which has been at the forefront of organizing the protests. His own brother was killed last week by Pakistani forces.
The dead in Rawalakot are being counted by a local journalist as a military-backed political party celebrates a vacant victory in the bloodied streets of Kashmir.
