Some activists have built defensive measures in recent weeks including roadblocks, moats and treehouses that they hope will allow them to delay the expansion of the mine for as long as possible. They argue that burning the coal beneath Luetzerath would blow Germany's chances of meeting its climate targets and break international agreements.
