The violence in Chin State on the border with India is the latest of two new fronts that rebels have opened against the junta. The other is in Rakhine State.
A joint coalition of rebels began a new offensive against the Myanmar army in October beginning in the northern Shan State on the border with China.
The UN now says, more than 200,000 people have been displaced due to the fighting. It's the most serious challenge to the junta since it assumed power in a coup in 2021. Serious enough for China to call for a stop to the fighting and for the President of Myanmar to warn that the country could be at risk of breaking apart.
