7:36Now PlayingAttacks are not uncommon in the Somali capital, but the bloodbath on the beach is one of the worst terrorist attacks in a long time. It came about even though the security forces had military successes against Al-Shabaab in recent years and the Islamist Islamist fighters at least out of Mogadishu.
According to police and eyewitnesses, a suicide bomber blew himself up late on Friday evening. Gunmen then stormed the area around Lido Beach, which is home to upscale hotels and chic restaurants.
