But a new hotspot is emerging: the popular holiday island of Mallorca. Officials are highlighting a new Mediterranean migration route between Algeria and the Balearic Islands, which are less than 300 km apart.
Our correspondent Jan-Philipp Scholz has spoken to residents on the island - and migrants, who see Mallorca as a gateway to mainland Europe.
