Officials say Pakistani and Indian troops have exchanged fire for another night along Kashmir's Line of Control, that separates the two countries. Delhi accuses Pakistan of supporting "cross-border terrorism", after gunmen opened fire on tourists in Indian-administered territory. Islamabad denies the claims.

Pakistan says it is open to a neutral investigation into the deadly attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir. Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has rejected India's accusation that Islamabad is behind Tuesday's attack in Pahalgam, where gunmen opened fire on tourists. Sharif says Pakistan's army is prepared to defend the country's sovereignty, as many in India demand military action against Pakistan.

Travel between India and Pakistan has been halted -- except for one religious minority -- Sikh pilgrims, as the nuclear-armed neighbours find themselves caught in a dangerous escalation.

DW Correspondent Adil Bhat is in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.

Sumit Ganguly is a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, speaking to DW from Menlo Park, California.
