Many Indian students who came to Germany with high hopes of climbing the career ladder are facing a harsh reality check when they get here. Shackled by high university fees and expensive housing, they often end up working as food delivery riders to make ends meet. But the industry is often underpinned by shady practices, involving anonymous subcontractors, subpar working conditions and pay below the legal minimum wage. So far, German authorities appear to be struggling to address the problem. On this episode of Business Beyond, we join the dots to find out how this exploitative system has been allowed to endure and what could be done to improve conditions for platform workers.
