Outside the city of Toretsk, I embedded with the 59th Mechanized Brigades "Shkval" battalion. This battalion, just like others like it in other brigades across the Ukrainian Armed Forces, are made up of volunteer recruited from the Ukrainian prison system. These convicted criminals are given a choice between severing the rest of their sentence, or waving the remainder of your time behind bars in exchange for military service. This move the authorities in Kyiv, prompted by the acute manpower shortage after over 3 years of full-scale war, has put these men in the position of fighting for both national and personal freedom by trading jumpsuits for pixel camo.
