1:44Now PlayingIDAHO FALLS - It’s been 13 years this week since 11-year-old Cady Tucker of Idaho Falls was killed but to her mother, it feels like yesterday.
Cady was traveling with her cousins on a Montana highway when a woman with extremely high blood sugar crossed the center line and slammed into their car.
"She crossed the center line going at a high rate of speed," Cady's mother, Pat Tucker, said. "My daughter took the brunt of a massive three car collision.
The driver was never charged and everyone else involved in the crash survived.
After years of mourning, Cady’s mother knew she had to do something to keep her daughter’s memory alive.
"We want to transform that day of tragedy and grieving to one of community awareness," Tucker said.
So “Run in the Spirit” was born - an annual race starting at Freeman Park and ending at Snake River Landing.
The fourth annual race will be held this Saturday, August 15. It begins at 10:00 a.m. and prizes will be awarded.
All proceeds will be used to put automatic defibrillators in District 91 and 93 schools.
Cady’s family wants to honor her life by raising awareness of the importance of maintaining good physical health while operating a vehicle.
"The way that Cady was killed and her story is extremely important in terms of protecting other people and other families," Tucker said.
