0:55Now PlayingIDAHO FALLS -- Along River Parkway near Broadway construction continues to detour drivers and pedestrians. Members of the community said they are anticipating the change.
“To upgrade it will only improve it, and I think it’s a great idea,” resident Joseph Peabody said.
The facelift will take what used to be six foot river walk and make it close to 16 feet wide.
The city hopes the $850,000 change will make this section of the Greenbelt more attractive.
“It’s going to be a lot nicer once it get’s completed, but I can live with the inconvenience for the short time it’s going to happen,” resident Phil Poole said.
According to Parks and Recreation Director Greg Weitzel the funding is provided by local, state and federal grants.
The extra grant money has allowed construction to start sooner than planned.
"ITD (Idaho Transportation Department) actually programmed this project to be done next year,” Assistant Public Works Director Chris Canfield said, "because of available funding we are able to move forward with the project this fall.”
Officials sat the River Walk will be ready for use in about six to 8 weeks, and final touches will be added in next spring.
"This is our front door, the Greenbelt for both residents and visitors alike I think it's going to be very well received once it's completed," Weitzel said.
Guard rails are also being added to the bridge walk making it safer for pedestrians.
