East Idaho Eats: North Hi-Way Cafe

IDAHO FALLS -- VO: Owners at North Hi-Way Café say it’s the longest running café in the state of Idaho. In fact, they’ve been serving traditional eats in Idaho Falls for over 80 years.

SOT: “There’s always somebody unique coming in, and they’ve come here for years, and years,” Roxanne Smith said.

VO: Everything they make stays true to the recipes the café was founded on.

SOT: “It’s just old time recipes and old fashion cooking. It just works that way for us,” Smith said.

VO: Traditional dishes like the chicken fried steak, broasted chicken, or any of the baked goods are just a few of North Hi-way’s specialties.

STAND UP: Today I’m trying their rare beef sandwich; it’s been on their menu for almost 82 years. I didn’t get my meat too rare, but you can get it as pink as you want or as cooked, as you want.

SOT: “We take the roast and we slice it very thin, put it on the homemade bun,” Smith said. “A lot of people think it’s similar to a super-sized old fashioned french dip.”

VO: Customers who’ve been coming for years still can’t make up their mind on what they love to order most.

SOT: “The shrimp salad is the best in town,” Customer Lance Macfarlane said.

SOT: “The (breakfast) menu is amazing, they range from omelets, bacon and pancakes,” Customer Paul Tremblay said.

VO: Regardless of what’s ordered Smith says it’s the customers that make serving at North Hi-Way Café worthwhile.

SOT: “It’s all because of the good folks here in Idaho Falls. That’s what makes this place fun to own and operate,” Smith said.
