Nate Eaton is breaking down the shocking case against former Letcher County, Kentucky Sheriff Shawn "Mickey" Stines, who is accused of fatally shooting District Judge Kevin Mullins inside the judge's courthouse chambers on Sept. 19, 2024.
Investigators say Stines and Mullins had lunch together before an argument erupted inside the judge's office. Surveillance video allegedly shows Stines using both his phone and the judge's phone to call his daughter moments before pulling out his service weapon and firing multiple shots, killing Mullins. Stines surrendered at the scene and was later indicted on one count of murdering a public official.
Authorities have never publicly identified a definitive motive, but court filings and testimony suggest Stines was suffering from severe paranoia and believed his wife and daughter were in danger.
The defense argues he was experiencing extreme emotional disturbance, psychosis, and profound sleep deprivation at the time of the shooting, setting the stage for a possible insanity defense.
In this video, we examine the latest developments in the case.
