In this video I discuss some of the lessons we can learn from Jim Collins in his highly celebrated work, Good to Great. Collins explains that it takes a certain type of leadership to lead already successful companies to greatness. This leadership requires stoic determination and an adherence to what Collins describes as the Stockdale paradox. I explain what Collins means by the Stockdale paradox – a reference to U.S. Admiral James (“Jim”) Stockdale who spent nearly eight years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, where he was routinely tortured and denied medical attention, but lived to tell the tale.

Furthermore, I explain what Collins means by stoic determination as one of the key factors driving the great leaders he studied. I do this with reference to the Roman slave turned philosopher, Epictetus, and … princess Anna from Frozen.

I also reference an important point made repeatedly by Eastern philosophers and strategist (notably Lao Tzu and Miyamoto Musashi) that we need to be like water.
