During a conversation with Bombay Times, the ace director, while acknowledging being an autobiographical filmmaker, said, 'The romance you see in Aashiqui is based on my first love with Lorraine Bright. I was 16, and she was 14 and studying in Bombay Scottish.' He further recalled, 'The classroom scenes, her being thrown out and becoming my responsibility…my personal life was in Aashiqui. That film had the truth of my life and the musical vision of Gulshan Kumar.' Notably, Mahesh Bhatt and Lorraine Bright got married to each other at the age of 20. This is when she changed her name to Kiran Bhatt. When the filmmaker was 21, they welcomed their first child in their lives - Pooja Bhatt. Speaking about the romantic-musical 'Aashiqui', the film was released in the year 1990 and achieved cult status.
