1:02:30Now PlayingShane J. Wood joins Pastor Josh Burtram on The Faith Roundtable for a deep conversation about the Book of Revelation, Christian imagination, empire, spiritual power, suffering, discipleship, and the unveiling of reality through Jesus Christ.
Most people approach Revelation looking for predictions, timelines, rapture theories, or hidden codes about the end of the world. But what if Revelation is not primarily about escaping reality — but learning how to faithfully live within it?
Drawing from his book Thinning the Veil, Shane Wood explains why Revelation was written to suffering churches living under Roman imperial pressure and how modern Christians often misunderstand the book by turning it into fear-based speculation instead of spiritual formation.
This conversation explores:
• why Revelation has become disconnected from discipleship
• fear, empire, and Christian imagination
• the illusion of worldly power
• Babylon, Rome, and political idolatry
• suffering, sacrifice, and the Lamb’s victory
• how Revelation critiques nationalism and empire
• spiritual warfare and the true enemy
• loneliness, trauma, and the presence of Christ
• how Revelation reshapes Christian identity
• why Christians misunderstand power
• the difference between prediction and formation
• what it means to “thin the veil”
Shane argues that Revelation is not a codebook for predicting the future but a prophetic unveiling meant to transform how Christians see reality itself. Instead of teaching believers to fear the world, Revelation teaches them how to follow the Lamb through courage, sacrifice, faithfulness, and love.
This was one of the most intellectually rich and spiritually challenging conversations we’ve had on The Faith Roundtable.
Dr. Shane J. Wood is a New Testament scholar, theologian, pastor, and Associate Professor of New Testament at Ozark Christian College. His work focuses on Revelation, early Christian identity, empire, and the intersection of Scripture, imagination, and discipleship.
