Natalie Castillo was home alone when she heard banging on the front door. Convinced someone was trying to break in, the teenager called her mother and then 911 before hiding in the closet.
That banging turned out to be neighbors trying to alert the family that the house was on fire. A fire from a home next door had spread to the Castillo’s house.
Fort Worth police had received the burglary call so they knew someone was inside. Officers knocked down the door, went in and found Natalie.
"He said smoke was already to his head had it been two more minutes the situation could have been different” said mother Yenitza Castillo. "My kids are everything to me, so for them to save one I feel like I owe them everything."
The family's house was a total loss after the fire.
Yenitza says once the family is settled in a new place, she would like to meet the officers again and express her gratitude.
