4:01Now PlayingA Memphis police officer and a teenage suspect were killed after gunfire erupted in Whitehaven early Friday, police said.
Interim Memphis Police Chief C.J. Davis identified the officer killed as Joseph McKinney, who joined the department in 2020 and was assigned to Raines Station. She said a second officer was in non-critical condition at Regional One. A third officer was grazed by a bullet during the shooting and treated at the scene, police said.
MPD said that the suspects were identified as an 18-year-old and 17-year-old.
The 18-year-old died in the shooting, police said.
