Trust is critical to the functioning of both markets and democratic politics; it ultimately rests on moral virtues like honesty, reliability, and the ability keep commitments. Trump's America has ruptured that trust; no other NATO allies are willing to help the US in the current crisis in the Straits of Hormuz because they don't believe such support would ever be reciprocated. This is bad news for the future of global order.
