12:46Now PlayingDonald Trump's administration has overseen an enormous concentration of power in the Office of the President, usurping many powers given to Congress. The Supreme Court ratified this power grab in its Trump v. Slaughter decision in June 2026, which overturned Humphrey's Executor and allowed the president to fire members of independent regulatory commissions under the "Unitary Executive" doctrine.
Unitary executive is very problematic because there needs to a a separation of powers within the Executive Branch, in order to protect the expertise necessary to run a modern government. This power grab is only the first phase of a longer term conservative plan, laid out in Project 2025, to permit the president to remove all professional civil servants and replace them with political appointees. This will return the US to the corrupt "spoils" system that existed before passage of the 1883 Pendleton Act.
