6:13:46Now PlayingMore than 53 years after sisters Marguerite “Maggie” Jenkins, 18, and Mary Jenkins, 16, were murdered in the Florida Keys, investigators say they have finally identified a suspect.
The sisters traveled from New Jersey to Key West in April 1973. They were last seen hitchhiking on Stock Island on May 2, and the following day their bodies were discovered in a wooded area about 100 yards from U.S. 1 at Mile Marker 99.5 in Key Largo. Both had been severely beaten and suffered apparent gunshot wounds.
The investigation went cold for decades.
In 2018, investigators developed additional markers from a partial male DNA profile obtained from a blood stain on one victim’s clothing, but there was no match in CODIS. In 2023, the case entered Florida’s forensic investigative genetic genealogy program, where genealogy research eventually pointed investigators toward David Allen Snyder.
In 2026, investigators obtained DNA from one of Snyder’s relatives. Authorities say testing confirmed Snyder as the suspect. Investigators also established that Snyder had lived at several locations in Key West between 1972 and 1974. Snyder died in Idaho in 2008.
