Dad Allowed Daughter to Be Abused by Girlfriend? Jamaria Sessions Case

Jamaria Sessions, a 9-year-old girl from Montverde, Florida, died on June 17, 2024, due to severe abuse that authorities have described as one of the worst cases of aggravated child abuse they’ve encountered. Her father’s girlfriend, Tyshael Elise Martin, was arrested on August 28, 2024, and charged with first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, and child neglect. Security footage from June 15 showed Martin directing the family’s 103-pound Rottweiler to attack Jamaria, kicking her while she lay motionless, dragging her across the floor, and saying, “I’m fixin’ to kill her.” The abuse was ongoing, involving extreme physical punishments like wall sits, forced running, and beatings, compounded by malnutrition. Jamaria’s death was ruled a homicide, caused by multiple blunt force injuries and a thermal injury to her foot.

Jamaria’s father, LoJuan Sessions, was arrested on August 30, 2024, and charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child. Evidence, including text messages, showed he was aware of the abuse, often joking about it or encouraging Martin’s actions, and failed to intervene despite being on felony probation from prior convictions. The case has raised concerns about missed opportunities by child welfare and law enforcement, as earlier welfare check requests were not acted upon. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against Martin, while both she and Sessions have been indicted and are held without bond as of late 2024. Jamaria’s maternal grandmother, Althea Chenault, who had been fighting for custody, continues to seek justice for her granddaughter.
