Hawk reads J.D. Vance's 2016 Atlantic essay in full and compares its arguments to today's political landscape. Written years before becoming Donald Trump's vice president, the article describes Trump as "America's opioid" and argues that simple political promises cannot solve deeper social, economic, and cultural problems.
The essay touches on the opioid crisis, Ohio, Middletown, manufacturing decline, community collapse, addiction, government, the American dream, and why many voters felt drawn to Trump in 2016. Hawk reacts throughout the reading, comparing Vance's original views with his current political role.
The video also examines Adam Serwer's influential essay "The Cruelty Is the Point," exploring how political identity, grievance, and community intersect in modern American politics. The contrast between Vance's earlier writing and today's Republican Party raises questions about political change, consistency, democracy, current events, and the future of American government.
