The death of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells on Horn Island off the Mississippi Gulf Coast has raised serious questions, and Hawk applies a courtroom framework to the facts as they stand. Direct evidence versus indirect evidence: seeing snow fall versus waking up to snow on the ground, and the inferences juries are legally permitted to draw from circumstantial evidence.
Wells, the only Black teenager in a group of friends who traveled by boat to Horn Island, was left behind when the group returned to the mainland. His body was discovered roughly 40 hours later. According to the reports Hawk cites, every friend on that trip and their parents then deactivated and scrubbed their social media accounts.
In Hawk's legal analysis, that kind of coordinated mass deletion would read to any seasoned detective as circumstantial evidence of consciousness of guilt and a possible cover-up, an inference a jury could be permitted to draw. With an autopsy underway in Jackson County, Mississippi, the questions now turn to the coroner, the medical examiner, the county prosecutor, and whether law enforcement conducts a real investigation into what happened to Nolan Wells.
