Hawk returns to Flock license plate cameras, the automated readers now blanketing American roads, and the growing evidence they are being misused. He points to reports that dozens of police officers nationwide have been caught searching the Flock database to find and harass ex-partners, and to a widely reported Texas case that crystallizes the danger.
According to that reporting, a Texas sheriff searched roughly 83,000 Flock cameras across the country without a warrant to locate a woman he suspected of using a mail-order abortion medication. The tip reportedly came from her ex-boyfriend, the same man she had gone to authorities to report for domestic abuse. No charges against her followed. The sheriff initially described the search as a welfare check, a characterization the company echoed, and was later charged in unrelated matters, which Hawk says is what drew wider media scrutiny to the camera search.
Hawk uses the case to argue the safety rationale does not hold up, noting the Flock CEO has labeled activists who oppose the cameras as domestic terrorists. He connects it to broader reporting of officers running plates to pursue women they find attractive, and argues a searchable, always-on tracking network invites exactly this kind of abuse. His bottom line: the cameras have to go.
