Chuck Grassley has postponed the Senate Judiciary Committee vote on Todd Blanche's nomination to be Attorney General, and Hawk, a trial attorney, explains why it is suddenly in real trouble. The committee splits 11 Republicans to 10 Democrats, so a single Republican no vote sinks it. John Cornyn told MSNBC's Allie Vitali he is prepared to vote no unless his terms are met, and Thom Tillis appears aligned with him.
Their demand centers on a roughly 1.78 billion dollar settlement fund and an addendum that Hawk says would give Trump, his family, his companies, and associates broad immunity from past and potentially future IRS scrutiny, worth enormous sums. Cornyn and Tillis want both permanently killed. Notably, both are senators Trump helped push out, Tillis declining to run again and Cornyn losing his primary to Trump-endorsed Ken Paxton, so neither owes him much now.
Hawk walks through the procedural chess. Blanche is already acting Attorney General and can serve in that capacity into January. So a new report suggests Trump may temporarily withdraw the nomination, keep Blanche in the acting role, and try to confirm him with a new Senate, one where Tillis and Cornyn are gone from the committee. Hawk calls it a major gamble, since Republicans may not even control the Senate then, and tempers his own expectations about the outcome.
