Maine has a new Democratic Senate nominee. Troy Jackson, a longtime state legislator and former state Senate president, became the nominee to challenge Republican Susan Collins after Graham Platner dropped out following credible accusations of sexual assault. Jackson, 58, is from the tiny town of Allagash and has run and won many races over a long career, and Hawk notes he is a thoroughly vetted candidate.
The reason Hawk is talking about him today is a report from Stephen Robinson, editor of the conservative outlet Maine Wire, claiming Jackson and his longtime partner, with whom he shares two teenage children, are second cousins. Hawk walks through the genealogical details the piece lays out, points out that such unions are entirely legal in Maine, and argues the whole thing is a non-story: nothing alleged is illegal, non-consensual, or criminal. His blunt take is that a legal, consensual private relationship has no bearing on the race.
What does matter, Hawk argues, is the contest itself. A recent poll has Jackson leading Collins 49 to 46, and ahead among independents. Hawk frames the oppo drop as a sign Collins allies are looking for anything to slow a candidate who is starting out in front, and closes by rallying support behind Jackson heading into November.
