Hawk turns to the USS Abraham Lincoln, the nuclear aircraft carrier that finally pulled into port in Thailand on Wednesday after a record setting 286 days at sea supporting combat operations in the Iran war. For the roughly 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard, it was their first real time on dry land in nearly nine months, and their first chance to speak freely to the press.
Drawing on reporting from MS NOW Pentagon correspondent Priya Sridhar, a former Navy Reserve officer who met the crew in Thailand and appeared on Lawrence O'Donnell's The Last Word, Hawk relays what sailors described as the worst deployment of their lives. Earlier accounts from families had already surfaced rotten food, clogged toilets, mold, and a mental health crisis that included sailors going overboard.
Hawk highlights the crew's fears that these marathon deployments without port calls could become normal and gut Navy retention, and the simple thing sailors said mattered most, a chance to FaceTime their spouses, kids, and parents after months of silence. He closes by placing responsibility on Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and on a war he argues the country cannot win or exit.
