Hawk returns to the $1.776 billion so called anti weaponization fund, the compensation pool created last May when Donald Trump dropped his $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS in a settlement signed by then acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. Critics have warned the fund could pay people prosecuted over January 6, all of whom Trump pardoned on his first day back in office, and Hawk lays out why he sees it as a signal to future supporters.
The news hook is discovery. The group Democracy Forward, now joined by IRS employees, is suing over the fund, and a federal magistrate has ordered the Trump administration to turn over documents revealing who designed its structure.
