Weiss pulled a 60 Minutes segment about CECOT prison and deportations after pressure from the Trump administration. The segment detailed how 260 men were sent to a notorious prison facility, with over 90% having no criminal convictions. CBS Canada aired the story, which then spread across the internet. Staff members at CBS News and 60 Minutes have expressed outrage over editorial decisions and some are threatening to resign.
Recent programming decisions under Weiss leadership have failed spectacularly. A town hall with Erica Kirk generated zero ratings and couldn't sell advertising slots. Coverage of Donald Trump hosting the Kennedy Center Awards similarly tanked in viewership. Tony Dokoupil has been announced as the new anchor for CBS Evening News despite his controversial interview style and apparent bias on Middle East coverage.
Weiss sent a memo to CBS News staff claiming that restoring trust in journalism requires hard work, stating that no amount of outrage from activist organizations or the White House would derail their mission. Critics point out the hypocrisy of these statements given her decision to censor the CECOT prison report and her lack of traditional journalism credentials or television news experience.
