The US bombed Iran last June, and the national security apparatus meant to defend against retaliation has been systematically hollowed out. Staff levels in the DOJ National Security Division dropped by as much as 23% in some sections, with four top officials removed who collectively held nearly 100 years of experience. Senator Mark Warner warned from the Senate floor that firing agents who investigate terrorists, foreign spies, cyber hackers, and child predators does not make America safer. CISA, the agency responsible for protecting critical infrastructure from Iranian cyberattacks on water systems, hospitals, and energy networks, lost more than a third of its workforce.
The FBI's foreign influence task force, created specifically to counter Iran, China, and Russia, was shut down by Attorney General Pam Bondi on her first day. US Cyber Command has had no permanent commander since April 2025. The institutional memory, inter-agency trust, and hard-won expertise built after September 11th are being dismantled at precisely the moment they are needed most. Intelligence sharing partnerships with allies in Europe and the Middle East depend on trust and professional credibility. When experienced American officials are replaced by loyalists with thin resumes, those allies pull back and share less. The core lesson of 9/11 was simple: when we fail to connect the dots, Americans die.
